Dips is a program designed for the interactive analysis of orientation based geological data. The program is a tool kit capable of many different applications and is designed both for the novice or occasional user, and for the accomplished user of stereographic projection who wishes to utilise more advanced tools in the analysis of geological data.
New Dips 6.0 Users
If you are a new user of Dips, the first thing you should do is complete the Quick Start Tutorial, which you will find on the Dips Tutorials page. This provides an introduction to the major plotting features of Dips.
Then complete tutorials 2 and 3 for instructions on how to create a typical Dips file, and how to create Sets.
Other tutorials provide guidance for more specific analysis features of Dips (e.g. kinematic analysis). It is recommended that you go through as many of the tutorials as possible. This is the best way to get acquainted with the many different capabilities of Dips.

Important Note for Internet Explorer Users
If you use Windows Internet Explorer as your web browser, you may see a warning message when you run this Help system. For example if you are running Windows Internet Explorer 9 the warning message appears at the bottom of the screen as shown below.

For optimal viewing and use of this Help system, you must select Allow Blocked Content. This will not affect your computer in any way, and will allow the left hand navigation pane (Contents) and other features of this Help system (e.g. Index and Search features), to display and function properly.
In earlier versions of Explorer the warning message appears in the Information Bar at the top of the browser. Click on the Information Bar and select Allow Blocked Content from the popup menu.
