Dips > Data Input > Traverses
Traverses are used for the following purposes in Dips:
To group data units according to the traverses on which the data was collected (e.g. linear scan lines, planar traverses, borehole traverses), using the Traverse ID number.
To weight the data to correct for measurement bias. Weighting
is used when the Terzaghi Weighting
option is applied to contour or rosette
plots. It is also used in the calculation of weighted mean vectors,
when Sets are created.
Traverses can be used to combine data with different orientation formats (e.g. dip / dipdirection and strike / dip data), within the same Dips data file, using the Traverse Orientation Format option.
Traverses are essential for defining and processing borehole (oriented core) orientation data with Dips.
To enter traverse information, select Traverses in the Analysis menu, and enter data in the Traverse Information dialog. See the following topics for details.
